Vice President Biden unveils new Recovery Act report

August 24, 2010

The Recovery Act is working, and Vice President Joe Biden had some metrics Tuesday to back up that claim.

With the help of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act investments, the United States is on track to double its renewable energy generation capacity by 2012 and significantly drive down the cost of electric batteries and solar technology over the next five years, Biden said to an audience of Recovery Act recipients at the White House.

Joined by Energy Secretary Steven Chu, Biden made the remarks during a speech to unveil a report, titled “The Recovery Act: Transforming the American Economy through Innovation,” that analyzed the impacts of Recovery Act investments in science and technology projects, many in the clean energy sector. Kids battling cancer bond over building electric vehicle

August 13, 2010

Each year, about 150 kids gather during the summer at Camp Discovery in Kerrville, Texas, to learn new things and have fun. But this isn't an ordinary summer camp — the attendees, ages seven to 16, all have been diagnosed with cancer. During the course of a week, campers get a great learning experience, but they also have the opportunity to talk about their experiences with other people who share the burden of their illness.

For Craig Egan, Camp Discovery has a personal connection — he's a cancer survivor. After attending some events associated with the camp last year, Egan, who is president of engineering consulting firm ACE Technologies, felt compelled to get involved. [More]

New buses transport students and savings in Texas

July 29, 2010

This fall, when students in Texas' Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) board school buses, some of them will be riding on the district's new hybrid electric diesel vehicles.

Thanks to Recovery Act funding from the U.S. Department of Energy's Clean Cities program, the district was able to purchase 25 buses—enough to transport 1,800 students to school while saving the district 12,000 gallons of fuel a year.
